Ontario One Call Fact-finding Scripts

In order to process your requests accurately and efficiently please be ready to answer the questions outlined in the following script:

Question to Homeowner:

Are you having some digging done on your property?
Will you be doing the work yourself or having a contractor do it?


Question to Contractor:

You’re calling for a locate?

Can I have your contractor ID number please? (Rep will confirm the name and tel. number)

Dig Site Information

What city or town are you digging in?

Is (city/town name) in ------ region? (e.g. is Ottawa in the Ottawa/Carlton region?)

What address do you need located?

What is the telephone number at the dig site address?

What is the nearest intersecting road to the address?

Could I have a second cross street? (only if no municipal address is given)

How deep will you be digging (in feet)?

Did you mark the area where you will be digging?

What side of (street name) is (street number) on? (get the direction, NSEW)

Where on the property will you be digging?

How far back from the street are you digging?

Do you wish to meet or mark and fax? (confirm the fax number is correct)

Work Activity

What type of work will be done? (e.g. placing gas service) List of Common Types of Work

What is the extent of the work? (e.g. property line to property line)

Will the digging be done by machine or hand?

Who is the work being done for? (e.g. Enbridge Consumers Gas)

Work to Begin Date

Most members require one week to complete a locate.

When do you plan to start excavating?

If caller advises they plan to start prior to standard date then inform caller that our members may not be able to complete a locate by that date. For safety and service reasons the caller should not excavate without first obtaining locates or clearances from members.

If caller insists on starting earlier then the CSR will indicate the caller's intention to start work on…… date. The CSR is required to advise the caller that if there is a damage without a locate, they may be liable.
